Since its founding, Siempre Unidos has employed people living with HIV as case workers, HIV educators, and program managers. We have created patient advisory councils and supported community groups organizing parades and marches.

We celebrate the courage, commitment, and leadership of the groups most impacted by HIV in Honduras – people who are LGBTQ+, Garifuna (Afro-Caribbean), sex workers, and people living in extreme poverty.

“Josie” is a 26-year-old mother raising three children ages 7, 5, and 1 year on her own. She lives just outside of the dump in San Pedro Sula, Honduras where she makes a living picking through the garbage for items to resell.

The Siempre Unidos staff provide monthly day-long health fairs, health education workshops, and income-skills training to her community. After attending a workshop about gender equality and rights, she sought help to obtain child support from her ex-husband. The Siempre Unidos staff referred her to free legal services and she now receives financial payments from the children’s father.

Equipping women like Josie with knowledge and skills helps them stay healthy and able to better support their children and plan for their futures.

“Our little neighbors, and their pet, came this morning to pay a visit to our facility and had an informal chat with me,” Pascual Torres, the Honduras Executive Director wrote last week. “They all received bags of candies.”

Situated where the territory of two gangs meet, our San Pedro Sula clinic is an oasis of peace and caring. We receive over 1,200 patient visits from individuals needing non-HIV services such as treatment for flu, high blood pressure, and infections. By serving the local community, our clinic is viewed as a resource for everyone, including gang members, and HIV-positive people can maintain anonymity.

We wish you a wonderful holiday season full of friends, neighbors, and family.

When the Covid pandemic hit, our staff and patients were well provisioned with masks. People prefer our services for many reasons, including a reliable supply of medications in a country where government clinics face frequent shortages.

We are grateful to Direct Relief, a Santa Barbara, CA, nonprofit organization providing medical supplies around the globe, for generously donating and shipping us these items for over 10 years. The photo below includes Erick Molina, Direct Relief Senior Manager for Latin America (in the center), during this week’s visit to Honduras.

Thanks to such partnerships, Siempre Unidos brings high-quality care with compassion to people with HIV and who live in extreme poverty.

Having grown up in the bordos, unincorporated communities living in make-shift huts without sanitation and subject to flooding from the rivers, Gina Meza knew the health challenges her neighbors faced. We met her in 2016 when she was supporting herself through medical school by cleaning and selling large, used coffee bags at marketplaces and peddling candy at the university.

Siempre Unidos donors covered the cost of her personal medical equipment, e.g., stethoscope and oto-opthalmoscope, and provided annual living stipends of $2,000. The Siempre Unidos physician met regularly with her to review her progress and provide support.

Today, Dr. Meza is an intern and working with Siempre Unidos, serving the same communities where she grew up. On her first day, Honduras Executive Director, Pascual Torres, wrote, “I am so proud and thrilled, practically jumping on the clinic roof! She is a breath of fresh air!”

Thank you for helping to bring high-quality HIV and primary care services and advocacy for some of our most vulnerable community members.
